I have been a huge fan of the resident evil series for a long, long time. Because of this I have purchased pretty much every title each time they are released to a new console. There are however, special releases when you get full updates to the titles. Game cube did a great job for RE1 and RE0 but for a long time we have been wanting a remake of RE2. As excited as I was to see the announcement of the remake I couldn’t wait to get my hands on it again. I mean really this is the introduction to Leon and every title he appears in is great. Ok, Ok I know RE6 had issue but the Leon campaign was great.
Now that I have been playing RE2 (2019) for a week now I couldn’t be happier. Here is my quick review for those new to RE2 because after my quick review here spoilers are completely possible.
Pros:
- Real Survival feel to the game. Ammo Management is key
- Can shoot and walk at the same time! Enemies take so much ammo to kill I am sure to compensate for this
- The game looks great. I would say beautiful but there is a lot of ugly things in the game
- Nostalgia, never underestimate the nostalgia factor
Cons:
- Freaking Jump Scares….
- Some awkward dialogue (this is from the original so it is beaten out by the nostalgia)
Conclusion:
RE2 is a pretty intense experience. If you are a survival horror fan I highly recommend playing. Even if you are not grab some friends and laugh at each other every time the player jumps at a zombie that comes out of nowhere. (This is how I played through the first time when I was 14). It will be a great time and once you have finished come back and finish the article.
Now to really get into it. From this point on there will most likely be spoilers so consider yourself-warned.
I super enjoyed myself playing. Running from the Tyrant, fighting of lickers, the giant gator, and dealing with G-Birkin. Although, I myself enjoyed RE5 and RE6 I completely acknowledge that they were a major departure from the survival horror genre and were very much action game. However, after the terrifying experience that was RE7 bringing it back to a series classic, RE2, was a great choice.
The game managed to keep the claustrophobic experience the original was but being able to move freely and look around everything somehow felt new. Those of you that didn’t like 5 and 6 don’t worry they made some updates to help retain that sense of dread you always had in the original release. First, I loved and hated the zombies movements they were so awkward and what you would expect from the undead but they were a pain to try to get repeated head shots. Secondly, the enemies were bullet sponges, especially on hardcore mode 4-5 headshots to stun a zombie then three stuns (hopefully) to kill outright. With the amount of ammo required you always had to make that decision is it worth it to cleanse the hallway of unearthly ghouls or run and risk getting bit. That being said I left a lot of zombies roaming the RPD as I descended into the murky underground of Raccoon City.
Now there was something that was that I really noticed playing through this as an adult. WHY THE CRAP did I need three hidden medallions to open the stair way to the boiler room. Seriously in the beginning of the game you watch a man get ripped in half for you to get his notebook to OPEN THE PATH TO THE PARKING GARAGE. It is such a crazy concept in these games. Come to think of it the game is a life or death escape room filled with crazy puzzles and creating a universe where it takes two special keys to find a valve to turn the showers off. Anyways I love it every crazy puzzle ever awkward English translation in the dialogue just makes me happy.
In conclusion I really don’t have anything bad to say about the game. It is intense, scary, and fun to play. It also makes me think I need to redesign my house with a series of puzzles and collectibles to open the door to my garage. Until next time keep your eyes open and don’t get bit! Especially if you don’t have a green herb.
